RADIOGRAPHY AND RADIATION PROTECTION: TOP TIPS FOR RADIOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION

Interpretation of radiographs can occasionally be problematic due to a multitude of reasons. Time constraints in a busy working day, difficulty in taking an adequate radiograph or finding unusual anatomy or pathology can all make diagnosis more difficult. The aim of this presentation is to provide the delegate with tips that they can use on a regular basis to help with diagnosis and provide awareness of when to ask for help.

Learning objectives:

  • To be aware of anatomical features which can be misinterpreted as pathology
  • To understand the importance of knowing what normal looks like on a radiograph
  • To be aware of the radiographic appearances of common dental diseases
  • To understand when further imaging e.g. Cone Beam CT may be justified

Kirstyn Donaldson BDS MFDS (RCPSG) PgDip DDMFR (RCR)

Biography

Kirstyn Donaldson is Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. She qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 2010 and undertook dental foundation training and senior house officer roles in the West of Scotland prior to starting her specialty training in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2013. During her specialty training, Kirstyn won the British Society of Head and Neck Imaging (BSHNI) trainee travel bursary to spend time learning about salivary gland interventional techniques. Kirstyn is a member of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR) council and is a member of the MFDS Preparatory Faculty at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.

COVID 19 AND DENTAL INFECTION CONTROL RISKS: WHERE ARE WE NOW?

In dentistry’s response and adaption to staff and patient safety during the COVID-19 pandemic it has never been more important to fully appreciate how transmission of infection occurs, and the mechanisms we have to mitigate spread, using the simple but effective concepts of “Standard precautions in infection control” and “transmission precautions”. These protocols were first introduced universally in the 1980s in a response to the AIDS pandemic, and are still serving us well today during the current pandemic. The aim of this talk is to provide an overview and understanding of current microbiological threats and the associated recent developments in dental cross infection control guidelines and legislations and how best to implement them to ensure smooth running of the dental practice.

Dr Caroline Pankhurst BSc PhD BDS MSC MRCPath (Specialist in Oral Microbiology)

Biography

Caroline Pankhurst has published extensively on oral microbiology including two books on infection control most recently “Basic Guide to Prevention and Infection Control in Dentistry, 2nd edition”. She was formerly a Senior Lecture in Oral Microbiology at KCL Dental Institute and is now actively involved in postgraduate dental education and was a finalist in the e- Learning Awards 2012. She served on the SAC in Medical Microbiology, Royal College of Pathologists, Editorial Boards of “Primary Dental Care” & BMC Oral Health and a past President of the BDA Metropolitan Branch. She is a Trustee of the Fungal Infection Trust and the Affordable Health Initiative.

WHERE ARE WE WITH REGARD TO MOUTH CANCER IN 2021?

Do you have a clear understanding of the contemporary approaches to the prevention, detection and referral of mouth cancer in 2021?  Unfortunately, despite increasing public and professional awareness of mouth cancer, 65% of patients with this form of cancer are still not detected until the tumour has advanced to Stage 3 or Stage 4.  This situation has deteriorated further in the last 12 months due to the impact of COVID-19 and an associated reduction in urgent suspected cancer (USC) referrals from primary care.  Prevention and detection of cancer at Stage 1 or Stage 2 are crucial aspects of improving the impact of mouth cancer for the UK population.  This lecture will provide an update on the potential for brief risk factor interventions in the dental surgery.  In addition, the use of a Mouth Cancer Toolkit will be presented.  Finally, the efficacy of the USC referral to specialist services depends on correct use of the cancer pathway in primary care.  Are you sure that you are using the USC pathway appropriately?

Professor Michael A. O. Lewis PhD, FDSRCPS, FDSRCS (Eng), FRCPath, FFGDP(UK), FHEA

Biography

Mike Lewis is Professor of Oral Medicine, at Cardiff University. He has held a number of senior professional positions including President of the British Society for Oral Medicine, President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research, Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and Dean of the School Dentistry, Cardiff University.  In addition, he served as the dental member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Antimicrobial Resistance and Hospital Acquired Infection at the Department of Health.  He has delivered more than 500 invited lectures worldwide. Mike is the co-author of three best selling medical textbooks, namely A Handbook of Oral Medicine, A Clinical Guide to Oral Medicine and Marsh & Martin’s Oral Microbiology.

Sue Boynton BDS LLM FFGDP(UK) FFFLM

Biography

Sue Boynton is an Independent Dentolegal Consultant and The Complaint Expert who has already helped dentists and dental teams to resolve literally thousands of complaints. Sue not only uses her knowledge, experience and expertise to resolve complaints, she also excels at transforming negatives into positives.

She built her skills over many years working with an indemnity organisation where she was the knowledge expert for complaints, and also provided expert input into international complaints resolution procedures.

Sue is a hugely popular and effective expert who works 1:1, with teams, and with organisations where she transforms complaints, feedback, and reviews into successes. The fact that Sue is a dentist and a dentolegal consultant means that she can see all perspectives and she is known for being on your side. Her expertise is much sought after in the UK and internationally and she is in great demand as a professional speaker. She also runs the popular Complaint Success group.

Sue is an NLP Master who has a Master’s Degree in Medical Law, and is a Fellow of both the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, and the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK). When she is not working Sue finds relaxation in skydiving, fire-eating, and sitting in the sun.

SAFEGUARDING ADULTS AND CHILDREN. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DENTAL TEAM

All of us deserve to be safe and be away from harm.

Sadly, high profile cases in the media have highlighted that abuse is still happening, and often to the most vulnerable in society. We hear of child abuse, elder abuse and modern slavery. These cases are upsetting for all of us and we wonder how these events could occur without anyone noticing. Surely someone knew about the abuse or had noticed something? Why did no one act or why were they not listened to?

Dental teams should not feel inhibited to raise a concern. The dental team has a statutory duty of care to all patients and the wider public, which includes ensuring that safeguarding arrangements are in place and are acted on.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify the emerging safeguarding concerns in Scotland
  • Identify signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect
  • Identify how to make a safeguarding concern
  • Promote information sharing for safeguarding

Steve Clay

Biography

Steve Clay served 30 years as a Police Officer reaching the rank of Detective Chief Inspector. He served 10 years in the Metropolitan Police and was an accredited Senior Investigating Officer responsible for Homicide investigations. During his career he was in charge of all mainstream Detectives and specialist units including Child and Adult Protection teams. Steve worked as a Safeguarding Adult Board Manager providing training and strategic guidance and advice to all statutory partners. He has a training company delivering safeguarding adults, safeguarding children, Female Genital Mutilation, Mental Capacity Act and Modern Slavery. He is the dedicated safeguarding trainer for a large Local Dental Committee.

THE SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO MEDICAL EMERGENCIES IN DENTAL PRACTICE

An ‘ABCDE’ approach to managing deteriorating patients has proved an effective method of recognising deteriorating patients in hospital. Now updated for community settings this presentation will take you through the recommended approach used by Emergency Healthcare Professionals and endorsed by the BDA.

Conditions such as Asthma, Diabetes and allergies are not uncommon. Recognising when your patient is deteriorating, taking steps to prevent them getting worse and how to recognise when they have become a medical emergency will be covered in this presentation. The value of teamwork between clinical and non-clinical staff, checking emergency equipment, communication and documentation will be emphasised and demonstrated.

Biography

Kate is a senior NHS Resuscitation Officer at University Hospital Southampton. Previously an Emergency Department Sister, she now has 28 years in Critical Care attending in hospital medical emergencies as part of the in-hospital ‘Crash team’ which sees 50-60 emergencies and 10-15 cardiac arrests a month. Kate has an interest in baby & child resuscitation out of hospital and runs resuscitation updates & drills for Dental & Medical practices. She enjoys teaching and has taught around the UK and abroad. She is a registered Instructor and Course Director in Advanced Life Support with the Resuscitation Council (www.resus.org.uk) and a registered Advanced Paediatric Life Support Instructor (www.alsg.org)
