CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

This course, based on the key principles of the International Commission for Radiological Protection (ICRP) of justification, optimisation and limitation, is designed as a comprehensive course in dental radiography and radiation protection satisfying the 2018 requirements of the GDC and covering all the specific IR(ME)R topics, including the essential requirements of both the IR(ME)R2017 and IRR2017 regulations, as well as providing an update on radiological interpretation and the new developments in dental radiology.

The new Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 require all employers to ensure that all IR(ME)R practitioners and IR(ME)R operators involved in X-raying patients are ‘adequately trained’ and undertake Continuing Professional Development. The GDC has recommended topics within their 2018 ‘enhanced CPD’ requirements including 5 hours of ‘radiography and radiation protection’ in every CPD cycle.

Aims and Objectives:

Module 1: Basic Physics

  • Understand basic radiation physics regarding xray generation in dental imaging equipment

Module 2: Modern Dose and Risk

  • Understand dose units and apply this knowledge to compare different modalities and machines
  • Know the relative risks of dental xray imaging and how to translate this to patients

Module 3: 3D Imaging

  • Uses and benefits of CBCT and how it can enhance your clinical practice

Module 4: Day-to-Day Imaging

  • Design a QA program
  • Recap selection criteria and apply to the sample cases

Module 5: Reporting

  • Refresh dentoalveolar anatomy and pathology
  • Discover reporting templates and review areas
  • Interactive spotter

Module 6: Compliance

  • Key points from the guidance notes
  • What to do when things go wrong

This talk satisfies the GDC’s learning outcome:

  • C – Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice
