Peri-implantitis, a Ticking Time Bomb

With the increase in dental implant provision growing at speed in the UK and around the world, it is becoming commonplace to see implant patients in all dental settings. This course will examine how clinicians may mitigate the risk of peri-implantitis with a robust monitoring process, early disease detection and intervention. It will also explore the current thinking around non-surgical treatment approaches of peri-implant diseases.

The World Workshop Classification document released in 2017, was the first to define peri-implant health, and additionally gave guidance on how to monitor dental implants effectively. More recently, the publication of the S3 Prevention and Treatment of Peri-implant Disease document has, with newer evidence and expert consensus opinion, amended peri-implant classification slightly. Kathryn and Jenny will investigate how this may affect ongoing implant management, S3 recommendations for monitoring and instrumentation, and how to implement this in a day-to-day clinical setting such as general practice.

Aim:

Heighten awareness of detecting early reversible signs of implant disease.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session the delegates will be able to:

• Identify and modify where possible the risk factors that contribute to occurrence of peri implant disease
• Explore the differences between periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases including their onset and progression
• Identify the key steps involved in performing a comprehensive implant clinical examination
• Outline the importance of differential diagnosis to try to prevent peri-implantitis
• Define the signs and symptoms of peri-implant diseases
• Utilising the most up to date guidelines to aid the development of practice protocols to help monitor and support dental implant health
• Discuss referral pathways and when to refer

Biographies

Kathryn Mayo qualified from Leeds Dental Institute in 1993 and from there gained her teaching qualification and returned to Leeds as a tutor. She has worked in NHS, private and specialist periodontal practices. Through her work at ICE in Manchester which is a peri-implant referral centre, she has developed a special interest in the management of peri-implant diseases and implant supportive care. Her current role as a clinical supervisor for Manchester University BSc Hygiene and Therapy undergraduates involves teaching implant assessment and management along with working clinically in private practice.

Jenny Walker is a dental therapist who qualified from Leeds Dental Institute in 2015. She works in both NHS and private practice and for past 8 years has worked in a peri-implant disease referral practice in the Northwest.  She took part in the innovative research pilot by Bangor University on the utilisation of dental therapists in the UK health care system. Jenny is one of the past BSP early career group representatives for hygienists and therapists (2019-2020).  This role lead her to be involved in the BSP adolopment working groups for the EFP S3 CPG stages I-III.

Together, Jenny and Kathryn present for the Salford University/ICE MSc in Dental Implantology course and they are both educators for NSK Ikigai. They have presented nationally about implant supportive care and periodontitis whilst also publishing various journal articles. Working together they have successfully devised and for the last 6 years delivered a 2-day course for hygienists and therapists on implant management.

Both took part in the BSP working group adolopment of the EFP S3 clinical practice guidelines Stage 4 and the S3, Prevention and treatment of Peri-implant diseases.
