The incidence of orofacial cancer has risen by 30-40% in the past 10 years in the UK.  The epidemiology statistics have also revealed an increased number of cases in younger individuals and women.  The presenting signs and symptoms of orofacial cancer are highly variable and can mimic benign conditions.  However, an understanding of the presentation of malignant and non-malignant conditions is essential and can be key in influencing the need for “routine” or “urgent suspected cancer” referral.  Efficient and appropriate is crucial for patients with suspicious orofacial lesions since the 5-year survival and outcome of these forms of cancer remain poor due to late detection.
